The brickwork foundation under our porch was falling out and some of the surrounding mortar was missing. Mr. Otto’s team made it look good again. Mr. Otto oversaw the work, making sure the work was done well, that the variegated colors of brick were placed aesthetically, that the original antique bricks were used as much as possible, that the new additions would blend in, and that the new mortar used would as closely match the original as possible. On a personal level, it was clear that Mr. Otto respects his wife, and I heard him require one of his young workers to speak respectfully when talking about their own spouse. I had heard what the worker had said, and the worker’s comment, although clearly not intended badly, would not help the relationship over time. Hearing Mr. Otto mentor the younger man and hold him to a healthy workplace standard impressed me as much as the handiwork did. Mr. Otto is someone to respect. I honestly wished I had more brickwork that needed tuck pointing so I could hire TCB masonry again.5
